Freed Palestinian doctor plans to sue Kadhafi

Agence France-Presse - August 5, 2007

THE HAGUE, Aug 5, 2007 (AFP) - A Palestinian-born doctor who spent more than eight years in a Libyan prison over an HIV outbreak is planning to sue Moamer Kadhafi, the Dutch news agency ANP reported.

"Tomorrow I want to examine the options available to me with my lawyer," to to pursue a case against Kadhafi, Ashraf Juma Hajuj told a news conference in the central city of Woerden, where his family has been based since 2004.

Hajuj accused Kadhfi of holding him hostage and of prostituting the law.

The medic, now a naturalized Bulgarian, and five Bulgarian nurses were condemned to death in Libya after being accused of deliberately innoculating more than 400 children with the AIDS virus, 56 of whom are now dead.

The group was finally extradited on July 24 after more than eight years of imprisonment in Libya and received a presidential pardon upon their arrival in Sofia.

The medics have always maintained their innocence, with the support of international experts who have said the infections occurred before their arrival at the hospital and were sparked by poor hygiene.
