Kiew, 17. Juni (AFP) - Vor rund 200.000 Menschen hat der britische Popsänger Elton John am Samstagabend in Kiew ein kostenloses Konzert gegeben, mit dem er auf das Aids-Problem in der Ukraine aufmerksam machen wollte. "Ich bin hier, um Euch alle im Kampf gegen Aids zu unterstützen", rief der Pop-Veteran der gewaltigen Menge auf dem Platz der Unabhängigkeit im Zentrum der ukrainischen Hauptstadt zu. Freiwillige teilten Kondome und Info-Broschüren mit den Adressen von Beratungszentren aus. Das Konzert wurde live vom Fernsehen übertragen. Ihm wohnten auch Präsident Viktor Juschtschenko, sein Vorgänger Leonid Kutschma, mehrere Regierungsvertreter sowie der russische Botschafter Viktor Tschernomyrdin bei.
Elton John hatte 1992 eine eigene Aids-Stiftung gegründet, um vor den Gefahren des Immunschwäche-Virus zu warnen und den Betroffenen zu helfen. Allein in der Ukraine unterstützte seine Stiftung nach eigenen Angaben in den vergangenen sechs Jahren 23 Projekte mit insgesamt zwei Millionen Euro.
