GLOBAL PICTURE

• People living with HIV/AIDS in 2006: 39.5 million (estimated range 34.1-47.1 million)
• Children: 2.3 million (1.7-3.5 million)
• New infections in 2006: 4.3 million (3.6-6.6 million)
• AIDS deaths in 2006: 2.9 million (2.5-3.5 million)

BY REGION

• Sub-Saharan Africa: 24.7 million people living with HIV/AIDS in 2006; 5.9 percent prevalence in adult population aged 15-49; 2.1 million deaths in 2006
• North Africa & Middle East: 460,000 infected; 0.2 percent prevalence; 36,000 deaths
• South and SouthEast Asia: 7.8 million infected; 0.6 percent prevalence; 590,000 deaths
• East Asia: 750,000 infected; 0.1 percent prevalence; 43,000 deaths
• Oceania: 81,000 infected; 0.4 percent prevalence, 4,000 deaths
• Latin America: 1.7 million infected; 0.5 percent prevalence; 65,000 deaths
• Caribbean: 250,000 infected; 1.2 percent prevalence; 19,000 dead
• Eastern Europe & Central Asia: 1.7 million infected; 0.9 percent prevalence; 84,000 dead
• Western & Central Europe: 740,000 infected; 0.3 percent prevalence; 12,000 dead
• North America: 1.4 million infected; 0.8 percent prevalence; 18,000 dead

OTHER FIGURES:

• - More than 25 million people have died of AIDS since 1981.
• - Africa has 12 million AIDS orphans.
• - In developing and transitional countries, 6.8 million people are in immediate need of life-saving AIDS drugs. Only 1.65 million are receiving the drugs.
