AIDS scare for those wounded in Berlin knife attack

Agence France-Presse - May 27, 2006

BERLIN, May 27, 2006 (AFP) - German police called Saturday for people injured when a teenager went on a knife rampage overnight in the German capital to undergo HIV tests, as one of the 28 victims carried the virus.

The 16-year-old youth sparked panic among the large crowds filing away from a lavish re-opening ceremony for the city's renovated Lehrter Bahnhof railway station, touted as Europe's largest international rail hub.

More than half a million people attended the ceremony, and the drunken youth began randomly slashing passers-by during the fireworks display.

He was arrested by police who said he was already known to them for other assaults and vandalism.

None of the injured received life-threatening injuries.
