LIMA, Sept 1 (AFP) - Bus riders in Peru's capital city are being menaced by a gang of thieves armed with syringes they claim hold AIDS-contaminated blood, police said Thursday.
"Supposed carriers of AIDS, their number undetermined ... are climbing on city buses and threatening the passengers with syringes of ostensibly AIDS-infected blood," said a police spokesman.
Lima radio stations have been flooded with panicky calls about the gang in recent days.
One witness claimed he saw one of the thieves withdraw his own blood before threatening victims.
"I call on the authorities to arrest these people who are threatening to stab passengers if they don't hand over their money," another caller told one radio station.
