The pope's on the phone!

Agence France-Presse - December 22, 2004

ROME, Dec 22 (AFP) - Christians with state of the art mobile phones can follow Pope John Paul II's annual midnight mass on Christmas Eve on their mobiles while contributing to the pope's anti-AIDS charity, Italy's H3G phone company said Wednesday.

The mass, as well as the pontiff's Urbi et Orbi (to the city and the world) Christmas Day greetings to the faithful and the Vatican's Christmas concert, will be broadcast to users of the latest third-generation mobile phones.

The UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) phones are equipped with video technology.

At the same time, they will be asked to contribute to the pope's Good Samaritan Foundation anti-AIDS fund and a project to upkeep 50 Roman churches.
