EU-AIDS: EU offers 22 mln euros to fight AIDS in developing nations

Agence France-Presse - August 9, 2002

BRUSSELS, Aug 9 (AFP) - The European Commission unveiled a 22-million-euro (dollar) anti-AIDS package Friday aimed primarily at providing care and prevention for young people in the developing world.

"Young people, and especially young women, acquire the immune deficiency virus at a high rate," a Commission statement said.

The European Commission, which believes that health is a key to the elimination of poverty, stressed that 95 percent of the world's 40 million AIDS sufferers lived in developing nations and that 15,000 people caught the disease each day across the world.
