Malaysia-condom: Malaysian women slam proposed curb on condom sales

Agence France-Presse - December 7, 2001

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 7 (AFP) - Women's groups in Malaysia have slammed a state's proposal to restrict the sale of condoms in an attempt to put them out of the reach of young unmarried people.

Jaclyn Kee of the Women's Aid Organistaion was quoted by the Sun newspaper Friday as saying the restriction could lead to an increase in unwanted pregnancies, abortions, abandoned babies and HIV/AIDS.

Marina Mahathir, president of the Malaysian AIDS Council and daughter of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, said the proposal by the central state of Selangor would not prevent young people from having sex.
