ABUJA, Jan 10 (AFP) - President Olusegun Obasanjo Monday on Monday took direct control of Nigeria's national effort against AIDS, an official statement said.
Obasanjo has also constituted an HIV/AIDS Ministerial Action Programme Committee to step up attempts to stop the spread of the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrom (AIDS), the statement said.
The committee, headed by Obasanjo, will include his deputy, ministers of health, education, information, defence, culture, women affairs and youth development.
The Nigerian head of state also approved the establishment of a working committtee on HIV/AIDS. This committee will include the national coordinator on aids programme in Nigeria, the statement said.
Obasanjo will formally inaugurate the two committees on Thursday. The statement said he would take charge of anti-AIDS efforts for two years.
On World Aids day last December, Obasanjo had promised to personally lead the campaign. Nigeria has a population of more than 120 million people.
