PHNOM PENH, Sept 8 (AFP) - Cambodia and Thailand are for the first time to discuss a scheme to boost health facilities along their ill-defined frontier including in former Khmer Rouge zones, officials said Wednesday.
"Public health along the borders between Cambodia and Thailand as well as Cambodia and Vietnam is an issue that has be be solved jointly," said Health Minister Hong Sun Huot on his departure for three days of talks with his Thai counterpart.
A health ministry statement said the joint programme under discussion would be targeted at seven Thai provinces and six Cambodian provinces, including the former rebel base of Pailin.
The areas remain dogged by high levels of infectious diseases and malaria, while access to facilities essential for basic public health remains among the lowest in the country.
The incidence of HIV and AIDS has also seen a massive increase in the area, only recently opened up to regular cross-border traffic and trade following the collapse of the Khmer Rouge rebellion.
