CHINA: China Says More than 170,000 Drug Addicts Have Received Methadone Therapy Since 2003

Xinhua (12.22.08) - Monday, December 22, 2008

Today in Beijing, an official reported that China has placed more than 170,000 heroin addicts on methadone since 2003, when the treatment was introduced there. Methadone substitution therapy is widely viewed as an effective tactic to curb the spread of HIV among drug injectors. The number of clinics providing methadone in China has grown from five in 2004 to 558 at present. The program is estimated to have prevented more than 3,300 HIV/AIDS cases and cut heroin consumption by 16.5 tons this year, said Wu Zunyou, director of the National Center for AIDS and STD Control and Prevention.
