Over the past five years, STD diagnoses have increased 20 percent in Northern Ireland. And the number of HIV/AIDS cases diagnosed there in the last decade has increased 300 percent. Health Minister Michael McGimpsey said addressing attitudes to sexual behavior, especially among young people, and improving access to care will be central to the campaign.
"[STDs] are continuing to rise, placing considerable demands on sexual health services," said McGimpsey. "Also whilst there has been substantial progress in reducing the number of teenage pregnancies, I want to see a further reduction. I have therefore set very clear targets within the Sexual Health Promotion Strategy (SHPS) to make real progress in these areas as well as enhancing access to our sexual health services."
SHPS targets include reducing gonorrhea cases by 25 percent by 2013; reducing teenage pregnancies in girls under age 17 by 25 percent by 2013; and trying to prevent sexual activity in 92 percent of 11- to 16-year-olds by 2013.
SHPS will promote a positive sexual health message. "We will only begin to truly tackle poor levels of sexual health by addressing attitudes to sex," said McGimpsey.
