NETHERLANDS: Netherlands Selects Glaxo Cervical Cancer Vaccine

Associated Press (11.20.08) - Wednesday, December 10, 2008

The Dutch government has selected the human papillomavirus vaccine Cervarix for a nationwide immunization campaign, according to GlaxoSmithKline PLC, the vaccine's maker. The effort by the Dutch National Immunization Program is set to start in September 2009; plans call for more than 350,000 girls ages 12-13 to be vaccinated in the first year. Cervarix is marketed in 67 countries but is not yet sold in the United States, where Merck and Co.'s rival product Gardasil is the only approved HPV vaccine. In June, GSK said it had responded to questions about Cervarix submitted by the US Food and Drug Administration and will provide FDA with more complete large- scale data next year. Both vaccines target the HPV strains responsible for most cases of cervical cancer.
