CHINA: China Verdict on Dissident Hu Jia Due Thursday: Lawyer

Agence France Presse (03.31.08) - Tuesday, April 01, 2008

Attorney Li Fangping said Monday that he expects a court to render a verdict Thursday in the case of Hu Jia. A human rights activist who initially gained attention by advocating for better treatment of AIDS patients, Hu is facing subversion changes based on his Internet writings and interviews he gave to foreign journalists. "We hope Hu Jia will be freed. But we are not optimistic," said Li, who noted that such cases often end in a guilty verdict. Hu could be sentenced to more than five years in prison. Hu's wife Zeng Jinyan, a fellow activist and the mother of a newborn, has been under house arrest since December. Hu's case is seen as part of a general crackdown on dissent in the run-up to the Olympics in Beijing in August.
