MICHIGAN: Cervical Cancer Vaccine

Associated Press (12.15.06) - Monday, December 18, 2006

In the final hours before adjournment early Friday morning, the Michigan House rejected legislation that would have encouraged girls entering sixth grade to be vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV). The legislation, which had received overwhelming approval by the state Senate, first passed the house by a 58-45 vote; however, after a motion was made to reconsider, the measure lacked sufficient support for passage. The House bill would have required that parents receive information about the vaccine; parental permission would be necessary before girls could be immunized. Some opponents of the measure raised concerns about the possibility of long-term or unknown effects; others felt the bill interfered with parental rights or that the program could be seen as implicitly condoning underage sex. HPV is linked to most cases of cervical cancer.
