New Tuesday clinic sessions were announced late on Monday, Dec. 4, and the very next day four people presented for testing, said Jan Whitlock, communicable disease supervisor for the county. "We think that's fabulous for the first week, and I think it will grow," she said.
Symptomatic patients are treated at the clinic at the time of testing. Others are contacted after test results are back, typically a few business days later, said Hilary Gillete- Walch, the county's epidemiologist.
From January to October, the county recorded 158 gonorrhea cases, compared to 116 for all of 2005, when the county ranked first in the state for per capita infections. Through October, the county recorded 260 chlamydia cases - a rate similar to 2005, when 319 cases were reported.
The new Tuesday clinic offers testing, for gonorrhea and chlamydia only, on a walk-in basis from 3 to 5 p.m. Fees are charged on a sliding scale based on the patient's income. Testing by appointment only is offered on Thursdays at the health department clinic and at Planned Parenthood, which is located in the department's lobby.
