ILLINOIS: Howard Brown Calls for More Syphilis Testing

Windy City Times (Chicago) (12.14.05) - Thursday, December 15, 2005
Andrew Davis

A recent spike in syphilis cases in Chicago has prompted Howard Brown Health Center to call for increased testing among sexually active men who have sex with men (MSM). The Chicago Department of Public Health reports that cases of primary and secondary syphilis among MSM increased to 135 during the first half of 2005 compared to 69 for the same period in 2004, an increase of 96 percent. HBHC diagnoses and treats more syphilis cases than any other Chicago-area private provider. Syphilis testing and treatment are available during the center's regular medical clinic hours Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 1-7 p.m., Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. (closed noon-1 p.m.), and the second and fourth Saturdays of the month from 9 a.m.-noon. Anonymous HIV testing is also available during these hours. For more information, telephone 773-388-1600.
