The Health Protection Agency reported Tuesday that deaths from hepatitis C in England have doubled in less than a decade. The number of people requiring hospitalization for the infection has tripled, as has the number of liver transplants necessitated by it. HPA is revising its estimate of those living with the virus. The current estimate, 200,000 people, or 0.5 percent of the population, is based on studies from the mid-1990s. The Hepatitis C Trust says about half a million people in Britain have the virus, and its experts have warned that the disease could kill 200,000 in the coming 20-30 years unless diagnosis and treatment are improved.
