IRELAND: State Plan Urged to Combat Massive Rise in Sexual Diseases

The Dublin AIDS Alliance and Red Ribbon Project recently launched "Straight Talking," a frank safe sex campaign including information about oral sex, masturbation and various forms of sexual intercourse. At the campaign's unveiling, the groups said the Irish government should develop a national sexual health strategy "to tackle the increasing rate of sexually acquired HIV infection, other sexually transmitted infections and general complacency about safer sex practices among 18- [to] 35-year-olds in Ireland." New HIV cases have remained stable for the last five years, averaging 300-400 cases. But STD cases for 2005 increased 12 percent over 2004 numbers, to 10,695 new cases. Since 1994, STD cases have increased 174 percent.
