INDONESIA: Soldiers in Indonesia's Papua Urged to Shun Prostitutes

Indonesia's military chief has instructed personnel in eastern Papua province to avoid sex workers and exercise abstinence, as HIV/AIDS has reached epidemic levels in the region, the state Antara news agency reported Tuesday. In Papua, 12 of at least 48 soldiers with HIV/AIDS have died, spokesperson Major G.T. Situmorang was quoted as saying. It is believed that one of every 10 Indonesians with HIV live in the province. "It is true there are several army members in this region who are infected with HIV/AIDS," said Situmorang. "The commander is very concerned and has urged soldiers not to have sex with prostitutes."
