UNITED STATES: Doctor to Take Helm at CARE

Seattle Times (12.03.05) - Tuesday, December 06, 2005
Paula Bock

After five years as head of HIV, TB and reproductive health at the Gates Foundation, Dr. Helene Gayle is leaving to become president and CEO of CARE USA next spring. At the foundation, Gayle led a $200 million anti-AIDS campaign in India, helped draft a plan to find an HIV vaccine, and increased TB prevention, treatment and research. Gayle came to the foundation from CDC, which she joined in 1984. At CDC, she rose to the rank of rear admiral as assistant surgeon general and directed CDC's AIDS program. She has worked with HIV/AIDS for nearly 20 years and is known as a strong advocate for HIV prevention and women's health issues. Gayle, 50, replaces Peter Bell, 65, who is leaving his post as CARE's CEO after 10 years.
