MISSISSIPPI: TB Tests Show No New Infections

Commercial Appeal (Memphis, Tenn.) (12.02.05) - Monday, December 05, 2005
Jimmie Covington

On Thursday, Mississippi Department of Health District Officer Dr. Alfio Rausa said second-round skin testing of more than 750 students at Horn Lake Intermediate School found no new positive results for TB infection. Results are not yet in on 29 people who were absent on the initial day of testing. Testing was ordered after an adult at the Horn Lake, Miss., school was hospitalized with active TB in late August or early September. The person, who Rausa said also had other health problems, has since died, though it was not reported whether TB was a factor in the death. Eight students had positive skin tests in first-round testing in October, but chest X-rays found no active TB among them. The eight will be treated with medication for nine to 12 months. All those involved in second-round testing had tested negative in October; the additional testing was necessary because TB has a 90-day incubation period.
