UNITED STATES: Man Planning to Row Across Atlantic Ocean

Courier-Journal (Louisville, Ky.) (07.12.05) - Monday, July 18, 2005
Marcus Wohlsen

Victor Mooney of Woodhaven, N.Y., stopped in Louisville recently to visit House of Ruth, an HIV/AIDS social services agency, and announce his journey to raise AIDS awareness. "AIDS is the polio of our time," said Mooney, who lost one brother to AIDS and has another who is HIV positive. "We are killing ourselves. And we don't have to." Mooney, who is African American, plans to begin his voyage Dec. 1, World AIDS Day, from Goree Island off the coast of Senegal, where European colonists once held African slaves bound for North and South America. While his journey is a tribute to that forced voyage, the focus will remain on AIDS, Mooney said. According to the UN, sub-Saharan Africa has about 25 million HIV/AIDS patients. New York City, where Mooney will end his trip, has about 40,000 African American HIV/AIDS patients, the most of any ethnic group according to city health department figures.
