CALIFORNIA: AIDS Group Helps Children Worldwide

Los Angeles Times (01.03.05) - Tuesday, January 04, 2005
Nita Lelyveld

The Children Affected by AIDS Foundation, founded in Los Angeles in 1993, began its first international fundraising effort recently to help AIDS orphans in Latin America. CAAF founder Joe Cristina, who is HIV-positive, has helped raise $18 million since CAAF began.

CAAF funds small, grassroots community groups that provide day-to-day support for HIV-positive children or children with HIV-positive family members. "What they needed most was a really strong fundraising organization that would be high- profile. They were really not able to fundraise effectively for themselves," noted Cristina, who said his background as a Mattel executive helped attract lucrative sponsorships. CAAF sponsors include Mattel, Nickelodeon, Toys "R" Us and Target.

CAAF funds raised through events, sponsors and individual donations are distributed in grants of $2,000 to $25,000. A panel of 30 experts reviews grant applications annually. The awards go to nonprofit organizations that provide basic medical, emotional, social, and recreational needs of children with HIV or affected by AIDS.

Camp programs are also supported, enabling children to relax without the threat of discrimination. "We consider bringing joy and fun to the lives of children an important part of our mission," said Catherine A. Brown, CAAF's executive director.

For its first 2005 grants, CAAF awarded $600,000 to 58 organizations in 22 states. Funding went to support groups, organizations that distribute provisions like toothbrushes and diapers, and programs that offer art and equine therapy. CAAF awarded $20,000 to Amigos Sin Barreras/Friends Without Barriers, a group that operates a food pantry four times a month for 300 people with HIV/AIDS, through whom 96 children are reached.
