CHINA: Tuberculosis Claims Nearly 10,000 Lives a Year in Guangxi

TB kills 10,000 people annually in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, health officials recently reported. One-third of the region's population, or about 15 million people, have been infected, and approximately 360,000 have active TB. The 2000 national TB survey found 651 active TB cases per 100,000 people in Guangxi; regional incidence has been rising at 3.38 percent annually since 1990. Since 2001, the regional health department has improved TB control and treatment by spending more than $9 million in World Bank loans and $1.2 million in government appropriations on medical facilities.
