The Department of Education's new health curriculum, introduced in schools in September, was developed based on a survey of parents, students and teachers about how to improve the sex-education curriculum. The new curriculum phases in various topics on sexuality, relationships and reproductive health between grades 6 and 8.
Some parents have said that certain topics such as homosexuality and masturbation have no place in middle schools. Dube said if the committee deems some of the materials too explicit, the materials may be changed somewhat. "But we're not going to change the end result of this curriculum," she emphasized.
Any changes the committee recommends will be implemented after Christmas, before most of the schools in the province begin teaching sex education. Dube said the curriculum has received as much support as opposition from parents.
