GLOBAL: UK Pledges to Put Africa at Top of G8 Agenda

Reuters (05.04.04) - Thursday, May 06, 2004
Madeline Chambers

On Tuesday following the first meeting of his Commission for Africa, Prime Minister Tony Blair said Britain will put Africa's problems at the top of its agenda during its presidency of the G8. "The Commission for Africa and its report will form a key focal point of our chairmanship of G8. This will be the issue on which we concentrate our efforts and try to get international agreement," said Blair, who three years ago called Africa a "scar on the conscience of the world." Africa is on the only continent to have grown poorer in the past 25 years. Blair said the commission will try to examine all Africa's problems together - including poverty, conflict resolution, HIV/AIDS and the environment - and develop a comprehensive framework to tackle them.
