GLOBAL: UNICEF Lists Top Five Fears for Children in 2004 Including AIDS and War

Agence France Presse (12.31.03) - Wednesday, December 31, 2003

AIDS, war, child abuse, life expectancy and a lack of investment in education will be key concerns for child welfare in 2004, UNICEF said today. "Each of these issues alone poses heartbreaking challenges for hundreds of millions of children. Together, they represent a global imperative to do more for children in 2004," Executive Director Carol Bellamy said in a statement. People under age 25 make up more than half of all new HIV/AIDS cases. Already, 14 million children have been orphaned by AIDS, and that figure is set to rise, the agency said. Governments in both the developed and developing worlds have failed to recognize the importance of investing in children, largely through better education, UNICEF said. "If we continue to invest in children and insist that they be a central focus of any discussion about development, we may indeed make the world a better and safer place," Bellamy said.
