CHINA: China Says to Punish Any AIDS Cover-Up

Reuters (12.24.03) - Wednesday, December 24, 2003

On Wednesday, China warned against any new AIDS cover-ups, just one day after telling health care workers they would be punished if they failed to report new SARS cases. At a meeting with HIV/AIDS patients in Henan province, Vice Premier Wu Yi vowed to punish anyone attempting to cover up AIDS cases, according to the official China Daily.

On Tuesday, in an attempt to avoid repeating the SARS cover- up early this year, China warned health care workers they would be punished if they failed to report new SARS cases.

China's AIDS prevention and control situation is "grim," said Wu, who was on a three-day trip to the province. The government said there are 840,000 HIV cases in China, and about 80,000 AIDS cases. Wu said all levels of the government should crack down on illegal blood selling and regulate the blood donation system. In some Henan villages, HIV infections soared as the result of a blood-buying program in which peasants sold their plasma and were injected with pooled blood from other sellers.

The UN has estimated China's infection rate could reach 10 million by 2010 if the nation fails to take the disease seriously. Activists and experts continue to point out local cover-ups and newspaper articles that downplay patients' suffering.
