GLOBAL: Red Cross Appeal Puts Largest-Ever Focus on Fighting Disease

Agence France Presse (12.16.03) - Wednesday, December 17, 2003
Deborah Haynes

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies launched its 2004 appeal Tuesday, reserving the largest-ever portion to fighting diseases such as HIV/AIDS. More than 40 percent of the $173 million appeal would go to such help. In contrast, just fewer than 26 percent of funds raised would be directed to natural disasters - work that is traditionally associated with the Red Cross. Diseases like AIDS, TB and malaria have infected more people than ever, despite the increasing efforts of aid agencies, said Alvaro Bermejo, head of health for Red Cross. The impact of diseases such as AIDS means there is less need to distinguish between health issues and natural disasters, he said. Next year's primary focus will be HIV/AIDS in Africa, the Red Cross said.
