A review of treatment guidelines for pregnant women with HIV shows that interventions can help both the mothers and fetuses involved. The authors call for more reproductive research, and they urge women and their healthcare providers to move away from the "therapeutic nihilism" paradigm. They also note that clinical decisions must be made carefully, "with the understanding that the health needs of the pregnant woman are usually whatever is in the best interest of the developing fetus."
