CDC Awards Funds to Universities for Research

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday $12.5 million in grants to fund 50 research projects to take place at academic health, research centers, and university programs throughout the United States. The funding, part of the CDC's Prevention Research Initiative, will go towards research on several topics, including the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, asthma, genetics, and recreational injuries. The average grant equals $250,000, for about three years of study. Included among the studies will be research on a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, strategies to reduce genital herpes simplex infections, and varicella vaccine safety.
