HIV/AIDS Devastating Economies in Sub-Saharan Africa

The HIV/AIDS epidemic is taking its toll on the economies of many African nations. A study conducted by the International Labor Office in Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia shows that 80 percent of people aged 20 to 49 are infected with HIV. The report also found that 96.8 percent of all AIDS-related deaths in 18 businesses in Zambia occurred among employees of all levels between the ages 15 to 40. The Regional Tripartite Workshop on Strategies to Tackle Social and Labor Implications of HIV/AIDS ended Wednesday in Windhoek, Namibia.
