Breast Cancer Resolution Approved

The House Commerce Committee approved on Wednesday a resolution expressing the House's support for education, early detection, and treatment for breast cancer. Legislation pending in the House would help uninsured women who have too much money for Medicaid and are too young for Medicare pay for cervical and breast cancer treatments. The bill has slowed while the committee addresses human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted disease that can lead to cervical cancer. Rep Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) wants the bill to include an amendment that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention be required to monitor HPV infections, with a warning added to condom labels stating that they do not prevent HPV transmission. The treatment bill would use federal Medicaid funds to treat women who are diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer, at an expected cost of $315 million over five years.
