Exogenous Reinfection as a Cause of Recurrent Tuberculosis After Curative Treatment

New England Journal of Medicine Online (10/14/99) Vol. 341, No. 16, P. 1174
Van Rie, Annelies; Warren, Robin; Richardson, Madeleine; et al.

A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that, in an area with a high incidence of tuberculosis (TB), exogenous reinfection seems to be leading cause of postprimary TB after a previous cure. Of 16 South Africans who had a relapse of pulmonary TB after curative treatment for postprimary TB, 12 were reinfected with new bacteria and two patients had reinfections with a multidrug-resistant strain. According to the researchers, the findings reflect the need to cure people of the disease and keep those with infectious TB from exposing others to the disease.
