Older Women With HIV Face Stereotypes About Their Age, Sexual Activity

HIV-positive women over the age of 45 say they are being stigmatized both because of their age and HIV status. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 20 percent of the people living with HIV or AIDS in United States last year were over 45, and 13 percent of that number were women. In addition to HIV, older infected women have to deal with more health concerns as they age, such as how HIV drugs affect drugs for arthritis, heart disease, osteoporosis, cancer, and menopause. Approximately 2,300 people attended the National Conference on Women and HIV/AIDS, which ended Tuesday in Los Angeles.
