Ackerman Orders Volunteer Screening

Washington, D.C. School Superintendent Arlene Ackerman has ordered all school volunteers be fingerprinted as a background check and also to be tested for tuberculosis (TB). These strict regional measures come at time when three school employees were convicted of child sexual abuse. TB tests have been required by the D.C. Department of Health for years, but Ackerman is going to start enforcing it, even for volunteer parents. Some parents have voiced complaints about the directive's requirement that the volunteers pay for both the fingerprinting and TB testing, while others are concerned that some volunteers--including those with old police records--may be discouraged by the fingerprinting mandate.
