Tuberculosis Cases Balloon in Russia, Could Spread

The World Health Organization's executive director for communicable diseases, David Heymann, warned on Wednesday that the tuberculosis epidemic in Russia could spread to other nations. Current statistics place tuberculosis rates in Russia at two to four times those in Central Europe. Almost 25,000 people in Russia died of tuberculosis last year. Statistics show that 76 of every 100,000 residents were diagnosed with TB last year, up from 73.9 per every 100,000 in 1997. Experts note that Russia's prison population, especially pre-trial units, are nests for the bacteria. The country's small but growing population of HIV-positive people are at particular risk for contracting TB as well.
