CDC Adds to Notifiable Diseases List

Fox News Online (06/07/99)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has added cyclosporiasis, ehrlichiosis, and congenital syphilis to its list of 56 notifiable infectious diseases. Cyclosporiasis, often caused by imported vegetable and fruit products contaminated by Cyclospora bacteria, is characterized by diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Ehrlichiosis is similar to Lyme disease, transmitted by ticks, and causes fever, chills, and nausea. Congenital syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease, which women can pass on to their unborn child. Notifiable diseases require doctors to report cases of infection on the state and local level. CDC epidemiologist Carol Knowles said, "Our hope is anytime a disease is highlighted, the public will become better informed."
