Warning Against AIDS Complacency as Death Rate Falls

Australia recorded an almost 60 percent decline in AIDS- related deaths in the first seven months of 1998, but residents are being warned not to become complacent about the disease. The most recent issue of the Communicable Diseases Intelligence journal reports that there were 63 AIDS deaths between January and July of 1998, compared to 151 AIDS deaths in the same period of 1997. AIDS diagnoses dropped from 205 during the first seven months of 1997 to 117 in the same period of 1998. While encouraging, the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations noted that Australians should not think the new statistics mean the epidemic has ended.
