South Africa Joins Africa-Wide AIDS Vaccine Research Effort

Researchers from South Africa will participate in two vaccine development projects focusing on HIV strains that are prevalent in South Africa and Kenya, the Sunday Independent reported. The South African government will contribute $830,000 to the $9.1 million project, which is primarily funded by the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative. Most AIDS vaccine efforts have focused on strains that are prevalent in the United States and Europe, despite the fact that two-thirds of the estimated 33 million people infected with HIV live in sub-Saharan Africa.
