Gay Man Goes Public With AIDS Vaccine, Hoping to Inspire Others

In an effort to increase awareness about AIDS vaccine trials, a gay man from New York has gone public with his participation in a vaccine trial. Troy Masters discussed his involvement in a large-scale vaccine trial involving 5,000 people in the United States, asserting that participation "is the most important thing we can do right now." Subjects in the trial will be exposed to a small portion of the virus, but there is no risk of contracting HIV from the actual vaccine. Half of the test subjects will receive a placebo, and all participants will undergo counseling and be urged to practice safe sex. Thus far, 600 people have already received inoculations in the United States.
