Shalala Announces $479 Million for High HIV Incidence Areas

Health and Human Services Secretary Donna E. Shalala announced Friday that approximately $479 million has been allocated for HIV prevention and treatment under the Ryan White CARE act. As part of the joint initiative between the Congressional Black Caucus and the Clinton administration, part of these funds will go to 47 metropolitan areas with high populations of Hispanics and African-Americans. The money is designated for essential HIV health care and support services for people with little or no health insurance. New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, and areas of New Jersey will receive over $20 million in grants.
