Hep C Crusader Wary of Fed Deal

Toronto Sun Online (12/21/98)

Last Friday, the Canadian government released the method of compensation for people infected with hepatitis C virus through tainted blood products, with people who carry the virus but show minimal symptoms receiving a single payment of C$10,000 and sick individuals receiving up to C$120,000 plus income replacement of up to C$52,000. Jeremy Beaty, president of the Hepatitis C Society of Canada, said that sicker people would probably be happy with the package since it included a provision for loss of income, but that people without symptoms may not be as pleased. "The not-so-sick people, who only get C$10,000, will be looking at this in the context of the recent [federal] announcement of C$240,000 for secondarily-infected HIV people." explained Beaty. The hepatitis C package compensates people infected with the virus between 1986 and 1990.
