Many African nations have "some of the most far-reaching programs" to combat the spread of HIV, asserts Mora McLean, the president of the Africa-America Institute. In a letter to the editor of the New York Times, McLean responds to a series of front-page Times articles on the HIV epidemic in Africa, noting that the articles make it appear that many of the countries in the region are not addressing the problem. McLean cites extensive programs by Uganda, Senegal, Madagascar, and Zambia. She adds that, while there is misinformation and denial about the disease in Africa, these problems are certainly not unique to African populations.
