$240Gs Fed Blood Pact Wins Praise

HIV-infected Canadians who contracted the virus from parents or partners who were originally infected through tainted blood transfusions will receive C$240,000 in tax-free compensation from the government. About 240 Canadians or their estates are eligible for the compensation, which comes from a C$1.1 billion fund allocated by the federal and provincial governments last March. The remainder of the fund is designated for people who contracted the hepatitis C virus through tainted blood transfusions between 1986 and 1990. While some praised the payout, others were disappointed that the hepatitis C compensation did not include people who were infected through transfusion outside of the stated time period. According to Canadian Hemophilia Society spokesman Mike McCarthy, "They [the government] should compensate all victims of the tainted blood tragedy the same."
