UK Fears Over New HIV Strain

Prisoners in the United Kingdom who do not receive the proper medication in a timely fashion could cause a new, drug- resistant strain of HIV to evolve, according to the Terence Higgins Trust. The Trust issued its warning after a survey by the National AIDS and Prisons Forum revealed that some prisoners receive no treatment while others receive medication erratically. Terence Higgins Trust Director of Operations Andrew Ridley cautioned that combination therapies must be followed rigorously or the HIV strain the patient is infected with will become resistant to the drugs. "The worry from a public health perspective is that when they are released back into the community, they may take back with them a drug- resistant strain of HIV which they will then pass on to other members of the community," he explained.
