Manila Legislator Urges Coconut Oil Research for AIDS

Reuters (12/27/97)

Abstract: Philippine congressman Ramon Bagatsing is urging his government to investigate the use of coconut oil as a possible treatment for AIDS. Bagatsing said that funds should be allocated for the coconut research, based on the findings of U.S. researcher Mary Enig, who reported in October that lauric oils--which are derived from the seeds of palm plants--could serve as a diet supplement to HIV-infected patients. The research, he said, was important not only because of the growing number of Filipinos affected by HIV, but because the Philippines is one of the world's leading producers of coconut oil.
