'Crippled' HIV Strain Could Yield AIDS Vaccine

Abstract: The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative in New York has awarded John Mills of Melbourne, Australia's Macfarlane Burnet Centre for Medical Research, $415,500 to continue his research into an AIDS vaccine. Mills says the money will be used to allow five of the center's scientists to spend three years examining the potential of a crippled strain of HIV--one that does not grow as the main strain and does not cause severe symptoms--as an effective vaccine against the virus. The primary goal, explains Mills, is to form a DNA-based vaccine, which is easier to manufacture and reproduce--two characteristics that make DNA vaccines particularly useful for developing nations.
