Renaissance for Italian AIDS Program

Science (12/19/97) Vol. 278, No. 5346, P. 2061

Abstract: The Italian government has overhauled its AIDS research program, now making grant applications anonymous in response to charges that the National Program for AIDS Research played favorites. The revised program divides funding into pathogenesis, with $6 million, therapy with $4 million, opportunistic infections with $2.5 million, and epidemiology with $1.5 million. Furthermore, where basic research used to receive about half the overall funding, the new program allots it only about 10 percent. While many researchers are relieved at the program's new life, some note that the review procedure --under which progress reports written by groups applying for continuing funding are withheld from reviewers--seems impractical. Alberto Mantovani, of the Mario Negri Institute in Milan, says the new policy is "nonsense," adding that the report is "a crucial element in the refereeing process."
